Wananga
or learning weekends are led by Hekenukumai with sessions sometimes taken by
Stan Conrad, the captain of Te Aurere, or Jack Thatcher, the navigator of the
waka. Key themes
covered in the wananga include waka history, traditional navigation,
crewmanship, sailing skills and techniques, waka construction, karakia, haka
and waiata. The current
series of wananga began in 2002. The location of the wananga may vary
depending in part on where Te Aurere is berthed at the time, however most
wananga are held at Aurere. Since 2004 many of the wananga have centered
around building the new waka hourua. Unless stated,
all wananga run from around Friday 6pm to Sunday midday. Wananga can be
attended by anyone interested in learning kaupapa waka, nau mai haere mai.
